Spiral (2021) (Jigsaw Spinoff) Analysis

Spiral: From the Book of Saw (Saw Spin-off)Meanwhile, a homicide detective named Fitch is kidnapped and put in a trap where he must cut off his fingers to avoid electrocution in a basin of water that is filling up. He also can't get out of the trap and dies. Fitch had ignored a backup call from Banks a few years earlier, which almost killed him. Due to his history with Fitch, some officers start to think that Banks might be responsible. Then, a box with a pig puppet and a piece of Schenk's tattooed skin arrives at the station. A small vial inside the box tells the police to go to a butcher shop that used to be a hobby shop where Banks and his father, retired chief Marcus Banks, would go. When the team gets there, they find a tape recorder and Schenk's skinned body. Marcus decides to find the killer himself. He goes to a warehouse, where he is taken away. Soon after, Garza is kidnapped and put in a trap in the precinct's cold storage, where she has to cut her spinal cord with a blade to stop hot wax from coming out of a pipe onto her face. She fails to do so, and Banks finds her body after she has died from injuries caused by the boiling hot wax.

Because Emmerson thinks Banks may be an ally, he gives him one more test, which consists of showing Marcus restrained in the air and having his blood slowly sucked out of him. Emmerson makes a call to 9-1-1 and tells the dispatcher that he is a civilian who is being chased by a gunman. As a consequence, the dispatcher sends a SWAT squad to the place where Emmerson is. He then tosses a handgun with a single cartridge over to Banks and gives him the option of either shooting a target that would rescue Marcus but enable Emmerson to escape, or shooting Emmerson and allowing Marcus to bleed to death from his wounds. Banks fires the target in an effort to rescue his father, which results in the loosening of his bindings and causes him to fall on the ground. Banks then starts to fight Emmerson. Marcus' bindings pull him up again shortly after the SWAT squad gets on the scene and accidentally set off a tripwire, which is why he continues to be held at an elevated position. The movement exposes a pistol that was attached to Marcus' arm, allowing the SWAT squad to mistake him for the gunman and end his life as a result of their error. As Emmerson runs away, Banks shouts helplessly in desperation.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw was conceived by Chris Rock as a means of revitalizing both the Saw film series and his personal career at Lionsgate.

After an accidental encounter with Michael Burns, the vice chairman of Lionsgate, at a friend's wedding in Brazil in 2011, Chris Rock decided to make his first horror film, Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021), and decided to include some humorous aspects into it. His suggestions for expanding the series were met with enthusiastic response by Lionsgate. Joe Drake, the CEO of Lionsgate, remarked that Rock's approach was totally respectful of the tradition of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his humor, artistic vision, and enthusiasm for this legendary horror property. New Saw film conversations were claimed to have commenced in January 2018 by industry sources, although the Spierig Brothers would not be involved. In an interview with Screen Rant, the filmmakers revealed that their picture lays the foundation for potential sequels. With Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, the authors of Jigsaw, Twisted Pictures was already working on a sequel by April of 2018.

Following Jigsaw's release, Stolberg and Goldfinger pitched a new Saw film focused solely on John Kramer / Jigsaw rather than any of his established apprentices to series veterans Mark Burg and Oren Koules, but Burg and Koules called the duo to inform them about Rock's ideas for a new film, with Rock contacting them shortly afterwards to discuss his concept. Previously, various writers had submitted their ideas for the next Saw picture to Lionsgate, but none had been successful, while Stolberg and Goldfinger had come up with eight alternative versions for the film until Rock came and fused his with the duo's. Burg and Koules assigned the pair the task of developing a pitch for Rock. Stolberg and Goldfinger did just that, and their concept was accepted by both Lionsgate and Rock, prompting them to compose their first script, which was greenlit a week later. Rock assisted Stolberg and Goldfinger with their writing, reworking the tale as needed.

In an early version of the script, Rock's character was related to David Tapp, who was played by Danny Glover in the first movie. Stolberg and Goldfinger decided not to go this way because it didn't make sense. In May 2021, Bousman said that he and Costas Mandylor had talked about bringing Mark Hoffman back in a future movie. Bousman and the rest of the crew talked a lot about having Tobin Bell play Jigsaw in the movie until the last day of filming. However, they thought that if they brought Bell back, the movie would feel more like the ninth installment of the Saw series than like a separate movie, which is what it was meant to be. Since Jigsaw died in the third movie, Bousman thought that the previous movies did not do Jigsaw justice by using flashbacks to bring him into the story. He didn't want to make the same mistake in Spiral (2021) or disrespect Bell's iconic performance. Bousman thought about having Bell sing a Johnny Cash cover during the ending sequence of Spiral: From the Book of Saw, but he decided against it because he thought it was too gimmicky.

This new Jigsaw copycat is different from the original in appearance, so it was decided to use a new puppet called Mr. Snuggles to replace Billy the Puppet. Bousman felt that if the original Jigsaw was changed, then a different puppet should also be used to ensure that the killer could not possibly be comparable. The production feared that reusing Bell's voice for Mr. Snuggles could have created questions about the relationship between both killers; an early draft actually featured Jigsaw's voice, only to then be revealed a digitally altered version of his voice and the story originally had all the speeches as actually being past recordings of Jigsaw's voice using words in a different order to show that the Spiral: From the Book of Saw Killer had digitally rearranged the words. When they couldn't come up with a replacement for Bell's voice, the filmmakers had a difficult time locating one. There were several other human voices that Bousman tried before deciding on the computer-simulated one. Only two days before the sound mix was completed, the final voice was chosen for the picture.

After Saw IV, Bousman passed down the opportunity to direct a Broadway production in New York City because Rock demanded that he direct the film himself.

According to Burg and Koules, the way in which Rock handled Saw was analogous to what Eddie Murphy did for buddy cop films in the film 48 Hrs., which provided the Saw series with a whole new point of view. In a similar vein, Bousman mentioned that there was less bloodshed and gore in Spiral in comparison to previous installments. He expressed the conviction that the bloodshed and violence were the gimmick for him when he first started working on the Saw films, but that both elements now serve the story, which places a greater emphasis on character, tension, and fear.

Choices for Spiral: From the Book of Saw's cast

Samuel L. Jackson decided to portray Chief Marcus Banks because he wanted to experience something new, such as the climax sequence in which his character is hung up like a marionette. Despite being a Saw fan, Marisol Nichols preferred to view David Fincher's Seven instead of the other films in preparation for the part. Patrick McManus auditioned for the part of Detective Marv Bozwick, but was called back to portray Peter Dunleavy, while Dan Petronijevic was cast as Bozwick, in an effort to pursue an acting career on film and television after years of playing on stage.

Max Minghella took up the part of William Schenk / The Spiral Killer because he desired to play in a movie with straightforward story-telling like the buddy cops of his childhood like 48 Hrs., and when he read the script, he believed it was that, as well as a Saw picture.

The Organ Donor started filming on July 8, 2019, in Toronto, Ontario, with Jordan Oram as cinematographer. Rock, Jackson, Minghella, and Nichols will star. Lionsgate's CEO Joe Drake said Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Rock, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols will make this picture distinctive in the Saw canon and they couldn't wait to share this scary new narrative with viewers. This was full-on Saw. On set, Rock rewrote his character's debut sequence. According to Bousman, a trap scene had to be deleted because it was too violent.

Filming was officially completed on August 28, 2019. Dev Singh edited the film during post-production.

The working title for the picture was The Organ Donor until the name Spiral (2021), along with Mongrel Media as the Canadian distributor, was leaked to the press on January 22, 2020. Spiral (2021) was revealed as the film's title in the first teaser poster and trailer, which debuted on February 5, 2020.

In the United States, Spiral (2021) was going to be released on October 23, 2020 according to the film's initial release date plan, which was handled by Lionsgate Films. The original date of July 15, 2020 was pushed ahead to May 15, 2020 in July 2019. The release of the movie was pushed back to May 21, 2021, as a direct consequence of the COVID-19 epidemic. This date will now take the place that John Wick: Chapter 4 was supposed to occupy. Later on, the release date was moved up to May 14, 2021, one week earlier than originally planned, just as movie theaters were starting to reopen.

Lionsgate confirmed on May 25, 2021 that Spiral would premiere exclusively on Starz in the United States on October 8, 2021. Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) was available on PVOD in Canada on June 1, 2021.

The film received a score of 40 out of 100 on Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, based on 33 reviewers, indicating mixed or average reviews.

Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the movie an average grade of B- on a scale from A+ to F, and PostTrak said that 63 percent of people who saw it liked it and 43 percent would definitely recommend it.

Many film reviews thought Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) to be a truly scary, albeit unevenly paced, detective thriller, but criticized its writing for failing to communicate the father-and-son bond of its key protagonists.

A film reviewer awarded the film one star out of five and criticized its finale, noting that he believed it was hurried and half-assed and clumsily written and worst of all, becoming progressively uninteresting.. He concluded his evaluation by declaring that the game was over.

Another film critic awarded the movie one and a half stars and Click Here made negative comments about the film's tone and the direction that it was given by Darren Lynn Bousman. He said that he was disappointed by the direction because he had praised the cast, and he described the movie as being "downright illegible" due to its lack of tension, story, and progression in the plot.

A separate film reviewer complimented the opening sequence but deemed it to be the film's sole redeeming feature, stating that the idea is "dishonest at best and fearmongering at worst." This film, like one of Jigsaw's easy riddles, is not as clever as it thinks it is.

As for Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021), Decker Shado had his own perspective on it. From the Book of Saw and the mind of Chris Rock comes Spiral (2021), the latest movie in the Saw series, which came out late in 2021. After a whole SUMMER OF SAW, you should know the drill by now: a killer is on the loose who doesn't directly kill his victims but instead tests them with clever and disturbing machines. Or at least, that's the idea. A lot of these traps leave a lot to be desired, and their methods and goals are also a little off. It is explained much better in his video.

Twisted Pictures revealed in April 2021 that a Saw X sequel was in production. When the news was made earlier than expected by the film's producers, director Bousman said he was astonished and disappointed. Because they created Spiral (2021), it doesn't imply that the Saw series is done. The fact that Spiral has arrived does not imply that Saw IX will not happen. The Saw series has nine installments, although this is the tenth. In the wake of Jigsaw, another Saw might emerge. I believe they're waiting to see how Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) does and how viewers react before deciding what to do next. In December of that year, Josh Stolberg announced that the script was completed.

Is there going to be a TV show based on Spiral?

During an interview with Deadline Hollywood in April of 2021, Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs revealed that the company has begun discussions with Mark Burg and Oren Koules' Twisted Television productions to develop a television series based on Spiral.
